Streaming Windows Media using Windows Media Services

Requirements

Installing IIS

Go to Start > Administrative Tools > Configure Your Server Wizard

Press Next until you get the following screen

 

Click Application server (IIS, ASP.NET) and press Next

Enable FrontPage Server Extensions and ASP.NET (optional)

Have your Windows Server 2003 CD ready.

Follow the prompts and you will have IIS6 installed in your system.

Installing Windows Media Services

Go to Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs

Click Add/Remove Windows components

Select Windows Media Services

Have your Windows Server 2003 CD ready.

Follow the prompts and you will have Windows Media Services installed in your system.

Windows Media Services

Start > Administrative Tools > Windows Media Services

Right click Publishing Points > Add Publishing Wizard

Use a meaningful name for the Publishing Point Name. The users will see this name in one of the following ways you specify:

(This guide will cover the option of playing files in a directory and its all sub-directories. )

If you choose On-demand publishing point, the client can fast-forward the song, choose the next track of the play list etc.

   

Keep the default settings unless you know what you doing

If you selected Broadcast publishing point, you will get a window as in left, otherwise a window as in right

Browse for the folder where you music is located. 

   

Set options to loop and/or shuffle

Click Next and Enable logging if necessary, otherwise click Next again

The Summary will be shown as below

   

Click Finish

 The next Wizard will start

If you need your server to allow WWW connections, then you will have to change the Server name.

The default name is the computer name. Change it to a static IP address or a DNS name (you can get one for free from www.no-ip.com).

Click Modify to change the Server Name

Type your static IP address or a DNS name

Press OK after you are done and you will be resumed to the previous wizard

Follow the prompts to save the ASX file

You can edit the metadata which is shown during playback

Click Test and it will launch the local Windows Media Player and attempt to play your stream. (If you specified a DNS name to your Windows Media Server name and you are not online, the stream will not play)

Go to the Announce tab

Copy the URL

In Windows Media Player > File > Open URL

Paste the URL

       

Enjoy your new Windows Media Server!
